How to price with your costs

  1. Add one line per cost: ingredients, packaging, freight, fees, labor. Example: 20 + 5 + 10 = 35 total.
  2. Set how many units these costs produce (1 for a single item or service).
  3. Type the sale price per unit to see profit, margin on price and markup on cost.
  4. Read the suggestions: biggest share, prices for 20%, 30% and 50% margin, and copy the summary.

Cost and price questions

How are margin and markup different? Example?

Margin divides profit by the sale price; markup divides profit by the cost. Example: costs 20 + 5 + 10 = 35, price 60 gives profit 25, margin 25 / 60 = 41.7%, markup 25 / 35 = 71.4%. Margin shows what stays from the price, markup shows return over cost.

What price gives me a 30% margin?

Divide the unit cost by (1 - 0.30). With unit cost 35, the price is 35 / 0.70 = 50. The tool shows the prices for 20%, 30% and 50% automatically.

Is this accounting or tax advice?

No - a simulation with the numbers you type. Taxes, card fees and fixed monthly costs change the real result; add them as lines when they apply per sale. Everything runs in your browser.
