Hearing safety first
Start with the volume low — every test begins quiet and nothing plays automatically. Raise it slowly, never wear headphones at high volume for the bass and sweep tests.
Private by design: all sounds are generated inside your browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing is recorded, uploaded or stored.
Channels
Center plays both sides at once; movement sweeps the sound from left to right.
Phase and polarity
In-phase should sound centered and full. Out-of-phase sounds hollow and placeless — if both sound identical, your wiring or channels may be swapped.
Bass, mids, treble
Each tone plays 3 seconds. Compare loudness: a big drop between them points at the speaker, not the file.
Frequency sweep
A 12-second glide from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Press play, or drag the bar to hear one exact frequency.
Test noises
Each noise plays 5 seconds. Rattles and buzzes reveal loose parts.

Test any speaker in two minutes
- Lower the volume, then play LEFT and RIGHT to confirm each side answers on its own side.
- Play CENTER: with two speakers it should image in the middle, not lean to one side.
- Compare IN-PHASE and OUT-OF-PHASE: hollow, placeless sound in both means swapped wiring.
- Play the three tones and note any big loudness drop between bass, mids and treble.
- Run the 12-second sweep, or drag the bar to suspect frequencies, and listen for rattles, buzzes or silent gaps.
- Finish with the guided check: four answers produce an orientation you can act on.
Speaker test questions
Can this test damage my speakers or headphones?
No — every sound starts quiet and stays within normal listening levels. Keep the volume moderate; the risk is to your ears, not the hardware.
What does out-of-phase actually sound like?
Thin, hollow and hard to locate, with weak bass. If in-phase and out-of-phase sound the same, one channel is likely inverted or the speakers are miswired.
Why do I hear nothing at some sweep frequencies?
Small speakers physically cannot move enough air for deep bass, and age or hearing limits cut extreme treble. A smooth fade is normal; sudden gaps are not.
What is pink noise good for?
Pink noise spreads energy like music does, so rattles and resonances stand out. Brown noise leans deeper and suits subwoofer checks; white noise sounds brighter.
